« Sêmainô » Research Project is a French National Agency for Research (ANR) and Swiss National Science Funds (SNF) joint venture, whose main focus is to investigate the history of philosophy from the angle of theoretical variations on the themes of language and meaning. The Project’s main objective is to strike a balance between, on the one hand, the historical singularity and peculiarities different authors, periods and disciplines present and, on the other hand, the conceptual networks and underlying patterns whose recurrent features have a structuring effect on the various ways philosophers have understood what linguistic signs are and how they are to be used in order to convey our thoughts and feelings, as well as argue with other people.
The Project’s coordinators – based in Lille (Leone Gazziero and Claudio Majolino, UMR 8164) and Geneva (Laurent Cesalli, Université de Genève) – will offer several Postdoctoral positions in Philosophy of Language and invite applications for a first postdoctoral resident Fellowship (Area of Specialisation : Ancient Philosophy of Language).
Even if this is a one-year appointment (starting on April, the 1st, 2016, it being understood that the appointment may be postponed to a later date), it will be renewed for an additional year (April, the 1st, 2017 – March, the 31st 2018), contingent upon satisfactory progress in research. This Postdoctoral Fellowship carries a salary of 23.222 € per year and will include an additional 2.500 € allowance for professional travels and research allocation.
Candidates should hold a Doctorate in Ancient and/or Medieval philosophy or, at any rate, should have submitted their doctoral dissertation by the time of application. As for their required background and qualification, candidates will demonstrate a strong familiarity with and continuing interest in issues related to Ancient Philosophy of Language. A record of publications or scholarly work on Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition will be a considerable asset.
While residing in Lille is not strictly required, the successful candidate is expected to be actively involved in the day-to-day life of the Project, especially in the organisation and participation to two local workshops (June 2016 and September 2017) as well as an international symposium (December 2016).
